Le Maramureş est une région où abondent de vastes forêts de sapins, de chênes et de hêtres (encore préservées de nos jours). Les maisons traditionnelles, posées sur des fondations de pierres sèches, étaient entièrement construites en bois. On peut voir les tuiles en bois qui recouvrent le toit (dont certaines demandent à être remplacées). La galerie extérieure court sur deux ou trois côtés de la maison, on s'y repose en été, on y entrepose divers denrées, oignons, pommes de terre, plantes aromatiques ou encore bois pour l'hiver… On y fait sécher le linge. C'est aussi un excellent poste d'observation…

Cette maison présente un bel exemple de la richesse de l’architecture traditionnelle roumaine où l’on peut apprécier le souci du décor, les couleurs gaies de la façade et de la galerie extérieure. Chaque province de Roumanie, a dans ce domaine, ses caractéristiques propres à l’intérieur desquelles les artisans locaux ont chacun laissé libre cours à leur créativité. Le bois a toujours eu un rôle essentiel dans l’économie villageoise. A la fois combustible (on voit à droite un billot et un tas de bûches fraîchement coupées) et matériau de construction, c’est également un élément de décoration qui est, selon les régions, utilisé de façon variée. Ici, le toit est entièrement constitué d’ardoises en bois, facture que l’on retrouve également plus à l’ouest, dans les toits des maisons traditionnelles du Maramureş.

En Nouvelle-Calédonie kanak, la case est souvent présentée comme le symbole de l'organisation sociale, du prestige, de l'unité et de l'accueil des chefferies qui composent l'univers social traditionnel. D'ailleurs, dans la plupart des langues, le même mot signifie à la fois case et clan.
Si le poteau central représente le chef, les poteaux tout autour sont les divers lignages composant une chefferie, et les "gaulettes" entre les poteaux représentent les liens tissés entre les lignages. Le travail de tous est nécessaire à sa fabrication et est le gage de l'unité. Le prestige se manifeste autant dans la position de la case sur les allées – celle de l'aîné ou chef se trouvant en haut – que par la taille de la case – celle du chef étant plus grande et plus haute, pour être vue de tous et de partout. La case est aussi le lieu d'accueil par excellence, celui où tout arrivant déposera son présent coutumier en signe de respect des maîtres du lieu (et de leurs ancêtres et esprits totémiques).
Autrefois, lors du décès d'un grand chef, sa case était brûlée et disparaissait donc avec lui.

Cette maison se trouve à Rupa, le bourg principal de l’ethnie sherdukpen, mais on trouverait des maisons semblables aussi à Thungre ou dans de plus petits villages. Les Sherdukpen, qui sont un peu moins de 5000, occupent une dizaine de villages dans le couloir traditionnel de communication entre Assam et Tibet, sur le flanc oriental du Bhoutan, entre 1500 et 2000 m d’altitude. Chez les Sherdukpen, les maisons nobles étaient tout en pierres, comme encore aujourd’hui certains dzong (forteresses) de la région, par exemple à Dirang qui en possède un bel exemple. Mais les maisons "en trois parties" sont plus répandues : on y voit une "cave" en pierre, où se réfugient les animaux domestiques ; une partie pour les humains, en bois, normalement faite de grosses planches ajustées sans clou ; et un " grenier" (zo) en nattes de jonc où l’on grimpe par une poutre crantée, et où l’on entrepose les réserves, notamment les grains. En fait, notre mot de cave n’est pas bon, puisque rien n’est creusé dans le sol : c’est au contraire la maison habitable qui est surélevée, comme en Assam les maisons tribales sur pilotis. En revanche, le mot grenier, dérivé de "grain", est parfait.

"Quelques ethnies du haut Assam (Inde du Nord-Est), dans la vallée du Brahmapoutre, vivent dans de telles maisons sur pilotis. Ici, nous sommes dans le village de Bangora, un village de l’ethnie deori (ou deuri), dans le district de Lakhimpur. L’unité d’habitation est composée de la maison elle-même (yâ en langue deori), du grenier à riz (bibô, qui ressemble à une maison plus petite, en face de la plus grande), et des plantations proches, comme les bananiers à droite (tiri popô) et les aréquiers plus élancés à gauche (gûîpopô). La maison est toute en longueur. On entre par un bout (ici invisible) et il y a en général une sorte de couloir latéral qui dessert plusieurs pièces séparées par des cloisons. Dans l’entrée, à laquelle on accède par une bûche crantée ou une échelle (ecugu), on trouve sous l’auvent une sorte de plate-forme où l’on reçoit. Tout au fond de la maison, au contraire, se trouve la cuisine. Près de l’entrée, la pièce du couple le plus jeune ; près de la cuisine, la pièce des vieux parents. Ici, on voit sur le côté une plate-forme annexe avec une ouverture qui donne sur la cuisine, et qu’on ouvre par beau temps.

Démolir les maisons, oublier la langue des anciens : tel est le chemin vers la modernité dans le village de Liti, à 10 km de Salonique au Nord de la Grèce. Il n’y a plus que des personnes âgées de plus de 70 ans pour connaître encore le nashta, langue slave du Sud, parlée dans le village même depuis le 6ème siècle, comme l’atteste la source byzantine Les Miracles de Saint Démétrius qui mentionne Liti et ses habitants Slaves. De même, il ne reste plus que quelques vieilles maisons en adobe, caractéristiques de la tradition architecturale locale. Les murs sont construits en briques de terre liées par du mortier de terre, isolant de façon naturelle aussi bien de la chaleur que du froid. Les briques sont faites de terre argileuse mélangée de fibres (paille, poils d’animaux). Dans les habitations, à un ou deux étages, un soubassement en pierre dépasse le sol d’environ 0,5 mètre afin de protéger la construction contre la pluie et les remontées d’humidité. Une ceinture en bois, apparente ou non, à la hauteur des portes et des fenêtres sert de protection contre les séismes. Les habitations sont généralement couvertes de chaux, blanche ou bleue*.

Appelée maloca en espagnol (un terme provenant de la língua geral*), la maison ronde des Indiens yucuna d'Amazonie colombienne est à la fois une institution résidentielle plurifamiliale et cérémonielle – centrale dans les échanges traditionnels (Fontaine, 2008) – et une enceinte architecturale servant de calendrier et d'horloge solaire (Cf. Von Hildebrand, 1987 : 244-247). La maloca (pají en yucuna) a toujours deux ouvertures ou fenêtres triangulaires en haut de la charpente, situées sur l'axe est-ouest. Étant donné que la région où vivent les Yucuna est très proche de la ligne équatoriale, le soleil se lève et se couche toute l'année aux mêmes heures (6 h et 18 h). D'après les diagrammes solaires réalisés à l'Équateur (Cf. figure ; Beckers, 2004:6), on sait aussi que le soleil est toujours au nord du 21 mars au 21 septembre, au sud l'autre moitié de l'année, et il est au zénith à ces dates à midi. En observant l'emplacement du triangle lumineux projeté par le soleil dans la maloca, on peut donc estimer non seulement l'heure en tenant compte de certains repères parcourus par leur cheminement quotidien d'ouest en est (à part à la mi-journée qui est systématiquement caractérisée par l'absence de zone lumineuse), mais aussi le mois de l'année, en fonction de la courbure plus ou moins prononcée (par rapport à l'axe est-ouest) de l'arc suivi par le déplacement de ces rayons entre le sud et le nord (6 mois au sud, 6 mois au nord de l'enceinte de la maloca). Par exemple, sur cette photo prise à 16 heures le 14 août 2009, le triangle de rayons lumineux éclaire la moitié sud de la maloca sur le mûr de clôture, et touche l'entrée principale (à l'est). La maloca forme donc un gigantesque cadran solaire négatif, c'est-à-dire un cadran qui marque la position du soleil non par l'ombre d'un gnomon, comme sur un cadran solaire conventionnel, mais par la lumière projetée au travers d'un orifice. *La língua geral est le nom de deux langues véhiculaires (le tupi austral aujourd'hui disparu, et le tupinamba dont descend l'actuel nheengatu), langues du groupe Tupi-Guarani utilisées au Brésil par les colonisateurs portugais à partir du XVIe siècle pour communiquer avec le plus grand nombre d'indigènes, dont beaucoup connaissaient ou comprenaient au moins un peu la langue tupi.
